Voden
is situated in the Yambol
District in the Bolyarovo Municipality, in the largely
undiscovered South East Corner of Bulgaria, handy to the Black
sea, Stara Zagora ski resort, Turkey and Greece. It's size is about 72
sq km and has a population of around 350 and growing...

The image is a bit blurred. For a hi-res
image, visit tundzha.com
or if your in the Elhovo area, there is a giant map in the
town center.
The Post Code is 8750.
The phone code is 04748 in Bulgaria and 003594748 outside of
Bulgaria.
For those of you who NEED to know such things, the Latitude is
42.083N, Longitude is 26.9E - apparently...
There are a number of renovated houses in the village and a
small number of British people living or holidaying there.
There is a larger British presence in Rujitza, on the other
side of the Malko Sharkovo (Rujitza) Dam. (about 2 miles away)
In fact I have a house over there that I visit regularly, it
helps that my next door neighbour has his Rakiya still next to
my garden, and he's very friendly!
The Voden house has some friendly neighbours. The guys who cut
my grass don't speak English, but one speaks a bit of German
and the other is a Liverpool FC fan - so we can communicate!
Another neighbour is a woman who works in the Haematology
department at Yambol Hospital, she can speak some English and
is very friendly and helpful.
The local petrol station is run by Krasi (Chris) who speaks
excellent English and worked in a London Hotel for a number of
years. His Uncle is the Mayor of Rujitza and he is currently
seeking government funding for a Golf Course and Holiday
complex near to the Dam. Watch the house prices shoot up
then...
You can get to Yambol
by car in about 45 mins and I've driven to Burgas
on the Black Sea Coast in 50 mins.
If you fancy a real drive, it's about 6 hours to Istambul in
Turkey from Voden, but if you just want to drive into Turkey,
the border is about 7 miles away and about 15 miles for the
Greek border. I'd recommend you to switch off your mobile
phone while driving around the area as you keep getting
"Welcome to Greece", "Welcome to Turkey",
"Welcome to Bulgaria" text messages!
As it's fairly close to the border, there are border
patrols around, but as long as you have the Hotel card with
your details on, or the address of the house you've just
bought :) and your passport, you'll be fine. Most of the time
they're just sitting in cafe's chatting anyway...
By the way - don't be put off by the Tank turrets scattered
around some of the fields, they're not operable - so we've
been told! There's a photo in the gallery

At the moment, the area is very
undeveloped when compared to the Sunny Beach/Varna areas,
which are the new Costa Del Sols.
As prices become prohibitive near the coastal areas, villages
like Voden will become more popular, as it's a fantastic
beautiful location that's handy to everything you could
need.
If you like the Big Seaside resorts, Skiing, Water sports, mountain
biking, bird watching, exploring, friendly people, great food,
or appreciate natural beauty, meadows filled with wild
flowers, acres of forests or sleepy fishing villages, it's all
close by, in a wonderful part of unexplored Europe! |
